The Trombone.

Levy Barlevy is a classically trained trombonist who began her serious studies with Amy Bowers at the age of 15. She quickly fell in love with jazz and improvised music, expanding into the world of big bands and jazz combos, while continuing her studies in orchestral practices. At the California Institute of the Arts, under the mentorship of trombonist Mattie Barbier, she explored extended techniques and New Music. With a strong foundation in classical technique and jazz style, Levy has freelanced all around Los Angeles, performing a variety of musical genres.

Composition.

Levy Barlevy’s compositional style is uniquely diverse and expansive. Her work spans structured improvised pieces, eclectic chamber groups, and traditional jazz lead sheets, all unified by her refined and distinctive style.

Levy’s compositions have been premiered at venues including the Troubadour, The Mint, Roy O. Disney Concert Hall, Coaxial Arts, and REDCAT.

Visual Arts.

Throughout her musical journey, the visual aspect has always been a part of Levy’s artistic practice. During her time at CalArts, she utilized the ceramics lab to create artisan instruments. Levy has an ongoing project in which she custom builds instruments for musicians to use in group ceramic improvisation sessions or in their own personal practice.
